Syngenta works along with the producers to promote the biodiversity

After the first experience realised in Argentina in the Experimental Station of Syngenta of Santa Isabel in 2015, the strategy to generate €œMultifunctional Landscapes€ begins to multiply. Thus it is that the producers begin to show the adoption that realise in their own fields.

The agricultural landscapes often lack the diversity and abundance of the flowers that need the pollenizers. Of there the importance of preserving and of promoting a space where the biodiversity blooms destining zones or strips in the edges of the lots, rural fencings, ways and other areas noncultivated, for the development of native plants that favor the presence of pollenizers.

A Multifunctional Landscape has a scenic, aesthetic, ecological value and of recreation €“ among others functions, contribute to value and services to the community, and in addition it hits positively in the production cultures.

The objective of this strategy of Syngenta is to reduce the impact of intensive agriculture on the pollenizers and to increase the biodiversity of vegetal and animal species in the productive zones.

Biodiversity in the field:

In the locality of Lezama and in the heat of wheat field, the Dr. Santiago Poggio, educational of FAUBA and investigator of the CONICET explained: €œwe spoke of Multifunctional Landscapes by all the number of functions that the agricultural and cattle areas provide the society to him. There are ecological functions that depend directly on the operation of the species associated to which we called services of the ecological ecosystems or services, as cicl

I accept of nutrients or the cycle of the water and carbon, the controls of plagues and diseases by predatory insects, and by all means: the pollination.

And it added: €œThe benefit of the work that makes the pollenizers we received it in the daily life. The main thing is to take conscience that since we rose until we lay down we used the products of the pollination, from the cotton that we used in the clothes and sheets, the coffee, the jam, the fruits, the production of seeds and vegetables or the oil. The beneficiary of the ecological functions of the biodiversity is the society€.

The project in Argentina:

The objective in the country is to draw up to a protocol of easy implementation that does not generate difficulties at the time of adapting, nor complications in the traditional practices of cultures and to spread its advantages with the simplicity to add this approach. In this way, it enters more producers take conscience exceeds what areas are a reservoir for the pollenizers more soon will be able to be reached a scale that has a significant impact at territorial level, that it will result in greater presence of beneficial insects. In addition, this practice could also delay to the appearance of resistance in plagues and weeds, favoring the presence of susceptible biotypes.

€œThis experience began in campaign 2014/15 in the Experimental Station of Santa Isabel, with significant results, since the flora was recovered and begun to have greater presence of species with flowers.

Ing. Santiago Poggio FAUBA and Conicet

The main profit of these investigations is to have demonstrated that most of the biodiversity that we want to conserve is in the margins of the cultures, associated to the fencings and the edges of the ways€, Poggio explains

In this line, the investigator details: €œThe proposal is to handle elements of the landscape where we already know that is the diversity of plants, that maintains to the rest of the levels of diversity of insects and animal€.

The project continues adding challenges as the producers are adhering to the same. Thus it is that Poggio advances as they will be the next passages of the same.

€œOur next step is to work altogether with the producers as here in Lezama, which implies to elaborate a protocol and to choose the places to preserve: generally in areas peri

domestic or associated to edges of fencings, railroads and ways€. The strips must have at least five meters in width by thirty to fifty meters in length Although this can be insufficient in cases of lots of great surface, reason why the adapted size of each parcel will be due to determine in future tests€

And it adds: €œWhat one sets out is the handling of the cut of the vegetation in these strips at least once a year according to the atmosphere and the non-application of insecticide weed killers nor. If dominance of pulses is observed, that are aut³gamas and generally little attractive for the pollenizers, the cut allows the appearance and the development of species as clovers or dicotiled³neas grasses, more favorable for these insects and, finally, for it renders of the cultures.€

This project frames within the strategy The Good Growth Plan; the initiative of Syngenta that promotes viability, divided in three pillars facing 2020.
